Dear Prospective Parent,
Thank you for considering committing your son’s future to Northwood School.
Our education philosophy is a simple one, it is to treat your sons with significance. They are all individuals, with their own strengths, weaknesses, talents, shortcomings, joys, sadness and ambitions. We have a great responsibility to ensure that we provide your sons with all the tools they need to be successful during their time at Northwood, so that they all have the opportunity to flourish, improve if need be and excel in the areas where they have been blessed with specific talents.
As a boy’s school with over 1100 boys, we recognise that we now have a bigger responsibility than ever to add innovative and creative industry specific content to our curriculum offering to allow our boys to go into life after school being already employable or even able to employ. In addition to this, they will also be well equipped with the 21st century skills that industry requires of the “next generation”.
These skills include: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, Entrepreneurial thinking, Collaboration, Curiosity, Adaptability, Leadership
As a school management team, we have to ask ourselves the question: how do we add to our current academic program to ensure we achieve the goals set out above? We believe the following strategies speak to this.
Engineering Graphics and Design Program
Northwood is one of the leading institutions when it comes to producing Engineering students. This subject currently has just under 300 students enrolled in the FET-phase and with additional growth in our learner numbers, this subject is sure to continue growing. During the first part of 2019, our school added Design as a stand-alone subject to our curriculum. Students in this subject field are producing amazing graphic design models and presentations. Through the investment in 3D Technology, our students are able to bring their design models to life. This is an amazing addition to growing skill sets.
Computer Coding and Robotics
The most exciting addition to our school’s academic offering has undoubtedly been the addition of Computer Coding as a compulsory subject for all our GET students. Traditionally we have had a very strong Programming department catering for students from grade 10 – 12, but with the growing need to produce creative and innovative thinkers, coupled with the shortage the world is experiencing in terms of Computer Coders, we now teach coding to all 500 of our junior boys.
The next step in developing this offering is the addition of Robotics to our offering which allows for the engineering, building and programming of devices that can perform tasks at various levels. Through the support of The Victor Daitz Foundation and Varsity College, the next generation of innovators, coders, entrepreneurs and engineers will be developed and trained.
Advanced Program Mathematics
The application and use of mathematics plays a crucial role in enabling students to complete the design, coding and engineering part of most projects. Mathematics is therefore still at the core of what should happen at a school. During January 2019, our school became one of the first institutions to add Advanced Program Mathematics as part of our compulsory junior curriculum. This program has the dual purpose of not only allowing boys to develop the knowledge of “application” but also at a secondary level allows them to think critically and engage in problem solving.
Drone Technology
We are riding the wave of change with fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as VR, AI, IOT and AR, and this is directly supporting new careers in multiple industry sectors. Tech savvy consumers and defence organisations for some years have used drone technology, but the benefits of this technology extends well beyond just these sectors. As drones become increasingly accessible, many of the dangerous and high-paying jobs in commercial sectors are being displaced by drone technology, offering safe and cost-effective solutions ranging from data collection to delivery. Through the generous support of the Victor Dates Foundation, we will in 2021, launch this Drone experience to our applied academic curriculum. Our boys will build, code and learn to fly Drones as part of this advanced academic program
Sport, Culture, and Other Extra Mural Activities
We are fortunate that we have incredible people working with our boys on the extracurricular front. These men and woman are excellent in both skills and relationship building and fostering, and have all set the very highest standards for their various sporting codes, cultural activities or clubs and societies. We are successful at this level because of the people who work with your sons, and as such you can look forward to them competing at the highest level knowing that they are well prepared, but also that they can play or engage with a smile on their faces.
Our Boys
Many things in our world and society are changing. The expectations, pressures, social conventions, laissez faire approaches and expectations that things must simply happen, is now the norm. It is within the context of the above that I believe schools have a far bigger responsibility than ever to teach and treasure some traditional values.
Work hard. Be absolutely dedicated to all that you do. Serve others to the best of your ability. Be kind, gentle and caring. Respect and honour women. Leave every place in a better way than you found it. Be Grateful and humble for all you have
Through God’s grace we look forward to a very special and exciting 2021 and 2022. We look forward to welcoming your sons to our Northwood home.
May God bless you all.
